At four o’clock in the morning, the screams begin again. The sound ricochets off the pavement of 49th Street, rounding the corner to Rockefeller Plaza, where four and a half hours from now, the 16-year-old pop sensation Justin Bieber will perform on the Today show. Though only roughly a thousand fans can be packed, sardinelike, into the plaza, 12,000 have been gathering for the past two days.

I really don’t like photo shoots. I really have a short attention span so standing in one place for hours is not me. I have high energy and like to bounce around. Looking into a camera…

What’s the most ridiculous thing a groupie has done to get your attention?

My mom has me on a tight leash and [she's] being real protective. The girls show up wearing nothing. I can’t lie, I’m 16, I don’t hate it. I don’t have a girlfriend.

We’ve got to talk about the hair. Why are people so obsessed with it? There are Websites dedicated to it?

I think the obsession with my hair is funny. People copy my hair. At meet and greets, people touch my hair. I don’t have any product in it.

It’s not much past 6 a.m., and Justin Bieber looks like any 16-year-old should at such an hour. Mildly catatonic.
“I’m tired,” he says, as if imploring a judge for a reprieve.

But when the call comes to head out for a sound check, he dutifully rises from a chair in the Today show greenroom and carries his slight frame up a set of stairs and onto a stage just off Rockefeller Center.

If Bieber wasn’t awake before, he is now. Thousands of teenage girls, some of whom camped out overnight, shriek the pop singer’s name as he rolls through his hit single Baby. Countless braces wink in the morning sun as mouths mime every lyric. Eyes mist over. Lips quiver.

Justin Bieber loves traveling to warm weather destinations such as the Bahamas. The pop star says he would love to make it to Brazil one day. (TIM AYLEN, HANDOUT / June 23, 2010)

A: I really like tropical locations, but I also like to go home to Stratford whenever possible. I also really love vacationing at the Atlantis
